How To Perform An Oral Cancer Self Check

We know that an oral cancer diagnosis can be scary and overwhelming but, if caught early, oral cancer can be treated! We want to make sure that each of our patients knows how to perform their own oral cancer self checks at home on a monthly basis. Being proactive about your oral health can prevent so many problems!

There are a few risk factors that can increase the chances that you’ll develop oral cancer. A few of these risk factors include alcohol abuse, excessive UV Ray exposure, chewing or smoking tobacco and frequently biting or chewing on your lips or cheeks.

What Are The Signs Of Oral Cancer?

Below are a few common signs of oral cancer:

  • Frequent bleeding in the mouth that doesn’t seem to clot quickly
  • Lumps or swollen areas in the mouth – gums, lips, palate or inside the cheeks
  • Sores in your mouth or on your face that don’t heal after a week or two
  • Discolored patches in the mouth – red, white, brown, or black
  • Numbness or pain in the mouth, neck, or face

How To Perform An Oral Cancer Self Check

Below are the 6 areas to check when performing your self-check:

  • Tongue – Check the top, bottom and sides of the tongue for bumps or swelling. Make sure there aren’t any changes in texture or color.
  • Cheeks – Check the insides of your cheeks for color changes or sores. Squeeze or press your cheeks for any tenderness or lumps.
  • Palate (roof of the mouth) – Run your finger along the palate to check for bumps. Open wide to make sure there are no sores or changes in color.
  • Face – Note any color changes in the skin and any bumps, lumps, sores or numbness.
  • Lips – Check both the inside and outside of the lips for sores or color changes. Press to check for lumps or bumps.
  • Neck – Press along the sides and front of your neck for any tender areas or lumps.

If you have any of the above warning signs, or if you want to make an appointment for a cancer screening, please contact Front Range Smiles at our Parker, CO dental office.
