Some Do’s & Don’ts for National Dog Day!

Most of us spoil and pamper our pets every day of the year, but National Dog Day on August 26th will provide another great opportunity to celebrate man’s best friend! Colleen Paige, an animal behaviorist, founded National Dog Day in order to highlight what we can be doing to help rescue, protect and support dogs in need.

Below are a few general do’s and don’ts for National Dog Day:

  • Replace any old dog toys. Broken or damaged toys may become a health risk for your dog, so replace them often.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue group. Even if you can’t volunteer long term or donate a large amount of money, these shelters can use all the help they can get. You can donate blankets, toys, dog food or even volunteer for a few afternoons of walking the dogs or cleaning the cages.
  • Plan a fun outing with your pet. You can throw your dog a National Dog Day parties and even invite other dog friends! Provide homemade dog treats or pupsicles and inflate a kiddie pool to help the dogs cool off!
  • Get your pup a checkup. National Dog Day can be a great annual reminder to head to vet for a checkup. Make sure your dog’s microchip is updated with your current information and stock up on heartworm or flea medications.
  • Adopt a dog from a rescue shelter. Not only will you be saving a life, but you’ll have a loyal and life-long friend!

  • Put off spaying or neutering your dog. There is a population problem among dogs, resulting in overcrowding of shelters and rescue groups.
  • Support puppy mills. There are already so many animals in need of a loving and caring home, and puppy mills are contributing to the overpopulation of dogs! Adopt a dog from a shelter and avoid the puppy mills.
  • Never leave your dog in the car, even for a short time. So many people underestimate how quickly and how hot a car can heat up in the summer. Don’t endanger the life of your dog!

Here at Front Range Smiles, we love our furry friends! We want to wish you a Happy Dog Day!
