Digital Porcelain Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays become necessary for any large cavity or filling replacement where more than 1/3 of the natural tooth is missing after the tooth is prepared. This form of tooth restoration is more durable than other filling materials and will withstand greater forces. It also has more of a “tooth-like” look to it due to the porcelain being more similar to the natural tooth texture and contour.

  • An inlay is similar to the original filling. This type of replacement is made to fit inside the top edges of the tooth.
  • An onlay is similar to an inlay, except that it’s larger and incorporates a replacement for the top edges of the tooth cusp by covering the area where it would normally be. In fact, dental crowns are simply onlays that completely cover the entire tooth!

The Procedure for an Inlay or Onlay is much the same as for a crown or bridge:

  • Removal of cavity and old filling material if present
  • Digital impression of the cavity
  • Computer designed restoration milled out of porcelain
  • Final restoration is tried in and cemented into the prepared tooth

If you think a filling has fallen out or if your tooth has been sensitive for more than a few days, please give Dr. Cejka a call to schedule an appointment!
