Tooth Infections

A tooth infection is a very painful infection that most often happens between the gums and teeth or right at the tooth’s root. Infections in the tooth are most commonly caused by severe, untreated tooth decay, but can also develop when a tooth is broken or damaged or if you’re already suffering from periodontal disease or gingivitis.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Tooth Infection?

  • Fever
  • Swollen glands
  • Pain when chewing
  • Open sores in the mouth or gums
  • Redness and swelling of the gums
  • Bitter taste in the mouth
  • Sensitivity of the teeth to hot or cold
  • Swollen area of the upper or lower jaw
  • Foul smelling breath

You should know that even though the nerves inside the tooth root may die because of the infection, which would make the pain go away, this doesn’t mean the infection is gone. The infection will remain active and continue to spread unless a dentist cares for it. You’ll need to come visit our office if you’re experiencing any combination of these symptoms.

An infected tooth can be prevented as long as you follow good oral hygiene and call our Front Range Smiles immediately if you think you may have a dental cavity or if you experience a chipped or loosened tooth.
