Dental Composite Bonding

Dental composite bonding is a procedure where a plastic material called resin is applied to the teeth and then hardened, bonding the resin to the tooth. Bonding is most often used for cosmetic reasons. This is because it’s a fast and easy way to improve the appearance of your teeth! However, it can also be used as a filling to close spaces in between teeth, repair decayed teeth, and to protect the root of a tooth if you have receding gums.

Despite your best efforts to keep them beautiful, your teeth may still develop cosmetic problems. Even if you’re as diligent as possible about staying on top of your oral health, issues can still arise. Whether you chip a tooth while playing sports or start to notice slight discoloration begin to darken, which occurs naturally with age, you have plenty of options. Dental bonding is among the simplest and most cost-effective of all of these options.

What happens during the procedure?

During the procedure, the surface of your teeth will be roughened and Dr. Cejka will apply a conditioning liquid. This liquid helps the resin adhere to the tooth. Next, the resin is applied, molded and smoothed into the correct shape and then a laser or UV light will be used to harden the material and “bond” it to the tooth! Once the resin has hardened, it will be trimmed, shaped and polished to match the rest of the tooth’s surface. All in all, the procedure usually only takes about 30-45 minutes and, unless you’re having a filling placed into a decayed tooth, you shouldn’t need any anesthesia.

Once your teeth have been bonded, you won’t need to take any special steps in caring for them. If you brush and floss them regularly, as you should do normally, your dental bonding can last up to 10 years! If you do notice any problems with your dental bonding, simply schedule an appointment with Dr. Cejka for a touch-up or a replacement.
