Dental X-Rays

There are different types of dental X-rays, each used to determining different things.

Intraoral X-rays (taken inside the mouth)

Intraoral X-rays are the most common type of X-rays used in dental offices. They show any cavities, and help the dentist check the roots of your teeth and the bone surrounding the teeth. All our intraoral X-Rays are digital.

There are 3 types of Intraoral X-rays:

  • Bite-Wing X-rays: This type of X-ray shows the details of both the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth. They’re used to detect any decay between the teeth or changes in bone density that may be caused by gum disease.
  • Periapical X-rays: These X-rays show an entire tooth, from the top all the way past the end of the root to where the tooth sits in the jaw. They can be used to detect any problems in the tooth and root structure.
  • Occlusal X-rays: Occlusal X-rays show full tooth placement and development. Each X-ray shows the entire set of teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.

Extraoral X-rays (taken inside the mouth)

The main focus of an Extraoral X-ray is the skull and jaw. They are used to look for impacted teeth, to identify problems between the teeth and the jaws, and to check out the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Our new Digital Panoramic X-Ray system allows for some traditionally intra-oral x-rays to be taken with the comfort of an extraoral film using the latest in digital technology. We use this for patients who are unable to handle traditional x-ray due to gagging, discomfort.

Dental X-Rays Can Reveal:

  • Decay hiding between teeth
  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Cancerous or benign tumors
  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Abnormal tooth root positions
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Problems hiding inside a tooth or below the gum line
